Why are some texts described as Post Modern?

Postmodernism has many definitions to it but the one that i think describes it is 'to be weird for the sake of weird'. It is aimed at a literate audience that can recognise the postmodern elements included by the film makers. Most elements that are used and recognised in movies are hypereality, intertextuality, playing with conventions and embracing paradoxes. Many directors adapt postmodernism into their work and once you realise what they are, it becomes a lot more interesting.

A very famous director known for his use of postmodernism in movies is Quinton Tarantino. In 2009 he created a movie called Inglorious Bastards which is in th genre of a war film however is very far from it but is just a fictional representation of war. The first postmodern element that can be seen in the film is at the beginning with the opening credits; Tarrantino uses a famous yellow text that can be recognised in all of his movies. It is condsidered to be postmodern as normal credits would usually be white. Another thing with his opening credits are made purposely long as he wanted to make sure the the audience remembered that they were watching a film and like his yellow text he did this with all of his movies. This makes it postmodern as not many directors do this due to them just wanting to get the audience engaged into the movie. Linking to the point of Tarrantino making sure the audience remembered they were watching a movie, is during a shot, he would reveal some of the set that is usually not seen in movies but Tarrantino reveals this as he wants the audience to be aware of the fact that they are watching a movie and things occuring are a fantasy. On the topic of fantasy, Tarrantino uses a Fairytale element to his work and this can be noticed in the opening sequence of the movie, as it uses chapters to take the audience through the film with different headings telling us what the next part of the story is going to be about. A theorist named Todorov talks about this being used in all films, he says that all films have a fairytale element to them with a hero, villain, heroin etc and this film does contain fairytale like characters and this is also a postmodern element done purposely by Tarrantino. With Inglorious Bastards being a film based on war, the violence shown in the movie is not what you would expect it to be like in general war films with battle scenes but has an overplay on violence as it is very brutal. It almost has a comical element to it as it is very violent and sometimes for no apparent reason; this is a postmodern element as it is an overuse of violence.
Although Tarrantino is renound for his postmodern, another film uses the same type of violence seen in Inglorious Bastards and this is called Drive which stars Ryan Gosling. Not much is given about the character in the whole movie, we are not even told his name. Throughout some of the film, he is seen as a calm character but then at times we see his 'pyschotic' side and there is one scene where this is very noticeable. He is kissing the girl he likes, and a postmodern element is shown during this scene as the lighting changes to make the scene seem more romantic with a red, orange glow lighting up the elavator in which they are in. As soon as the kiss is over, it soon turns brutal with the end of the scene leading to Gosling crushing his head with his foot. This scene reveals his real violent side as before we are just known to his quite and relaxed self. Just like Inglorious Bastards, Drive also has a fairytale conventions like Inglorious Bastards as Todorov's theory which talks about fairytale elements in films, Drive makes this very clear with Gosling being the Hero, Irene being the Princess and many more.
Talking of the fairytale aspect, drive contains a fantasy element and uses coneventions from the computer game 'Grand Theft Auto'. These conventions will mainly be recognised people who would play the game or an literate audience. It uses bird eye shots which also are used in the game and give it the reflect of a artificial and fantasiced element to the film. In addition, to the game, the opening of the movie uses a colourful text which gives it quite an 80's feel but is also used in the game; we have already spoke about this before when we look back at tarrantino's work as he uses the same text withtin his movies of a yellow font colour. Linking back to the 80's theme, Drive does not specify a time period in which it is set in but when we look at the soundtrack of the film, it has many 80's elements in them. Another thinkg we can look at to associate with the 1980's is the Jacket Gosling wears has a  very distinctive scorpion on the back of it and this type of jacket would be seen as being quite old fashioned, this plays on conventions and allows the audience to question the time period. Drive also plays on is the setting and location the movie is made in, its supposed to be in the busy streets of Los Angles but they make it to seem very lonely and has no one around. This is a postmodern element because the audience is aware that the location is LA but it is strangley quite and we are not told why.

Another film which is known to be postmodern, yet is very different from Inglorious Bastards and Drive and it is called Funny Games. The genre behind the movie is a thriller but contains many elements that question the conventions of it. The two films I have spoke about before contain a lot of brutal violence which is shown to the audience and usually thrillers would show violence as this is a way to engage the audience and keep them interested, however this film does not show any violence, but plays on the conventions of thrillers. To an illiterate audience, it would be seen as very boring but they take the violence out of the movie. The film has a memorable scene in it that became very popular as it take out the conventions of a movie all together. It is the rewind scene where the actor rewinds what we have seen and changes the story to make it the way he wants. Like Tarrantino revealing the set so the audience can remember they are watching a film and it is not real, Funny Games also does this as it takes away the tension from the film (which is what mainly consists in thrillers).

These films are very unusual to how we would expect them to be as they have been created in a postmodern way. They are as Mo from simpson puts postmoderism and calls says they do it this way for the sake of being weird.

Music video essay

Making the music video is one thing but having to thinking about the moving image is one what makes the music video what it is. When creating the music video, i didn't realise the amount of thought that had to go behind developing it. For my music video, i had used many media conventions that i could to see if i could make it as professional as possible and after doing the research in these areas I realised what techniques would be needed to get into the area of it being professional.

Firstly, there is the camera; this mainly consists of the movement and the positioning of it. With the movement, i decided it would be best at most times to keep it stationary so the audience could get a good look at the artist in the video and identify the conventions we had that related him to the chosen genre. The scene at the end consists of movement and this is the only scene in which there is movement and it relates to the story of the song that is being shown. Camera shots were also important for the video as it will show the artist in different locations and reveal more with what is happening in the song. It allows the audience to get a better view of the artist so they can see what the creator intended for them to see, without trying to show anything to show it is a music video e.g. showing the objects to create the music video. We used a variety of shots in the music video for different reasons. One shot we used is an long shot, and this was done mainly for the fact to show the artists location because doing our research allowed us to see the different locations and conventions used in a hip hop music video and we wanted to copy this fact and so used a long shot to show the setting. We also used a close ups and extreme close ups to show the expressions of the artist as this was vital for the story in the music video and also the fact that the artist is singing so it tells the audience who the artist actually is. In the final scene of the video, we use a low angle shot to show the artist moving on from him drinking and walking into the sunset. Then, like this kind of shot, we used eye level shots again to show the expressions of the artist which will allow the audience learn what is happening the video.

Editing is the process of showing different scenes in the music video and the most common type of editing in my music video is straight cut, which just goes from one shot to another and allows the audiences eye to look at one point of the video and then in the next shot they'll see the next thing the creator wants them to see. We didn't use any other type of fancy shots in the music video due heavily to the genre of the music video. With hip hop being quite a strict and straight forward genre, this is what we wanted to do with ours and also it is quite a serious genre as well as music video so keeping it basic with the editing techniques was the best thing to do.

Lighting is highly important in music video because it allows the viewer to be able to see what is happening. Again linking with the genre of the of the music video as it is quite strict and straight forward, we wanted the lighting to bring this across also; for this then we made the lighting quite dark and did a lot of the filming at night time so it would be dark and have a bit of lighting to create a shadow effect. For example, on the scene on the rooftop, we used the car lights on the artist to make him stand out. Other than this we used low key lighting which is light purposely chosen to create the darkness that we wanted. As we wanted it to be quite dark and shadowed, we chose lighting to create this as in the video it always shows that it is night time in the background.

With sound, we had the music video in the background and just used lip syncing so most of the sound that occurred was the music and this is known as non- digetic sound. However, there is the start scene and the final scene which uses synchronous sound as in the beginning scene, the gears are changed and this can be heard in the music video. This was done this way because we wanted to show the driver moving off and using this to represent that action. Then in the final scene there is the air that can be heard and as the artist is outside this is also synchronous sound. Another area where different sound is used is when the artist is speaking but he cannot be seen in the shot. This is known as Off Screen sound and was done to give the audience better knowledge of the story and what the artists views were.

Mis-En-Scene was vital in the music video due to us using it to represent the genre we were making the music video in even if the audience could not hear the song. The first thing we thought about was costume and tried to dress the artist up to make him look as if he was from the hip hop area, for example using a black New York  hat with a black hooded jacket; although this can be seen of as being a stereotype, it is an easy was for the audience to recognise the genre of the song. In other shots, we wanted to him to seem wealthy and dressed him up a bit smarter but with the same hip hop feel and did this in order to link with the story. The locations used were also done to link in with the genre of the song; after we had done our research and analysed the conventions in a hip hop music video regarding location then we tried to copy this, for example the artist in front of a large building. Another thing we used in the video, were props and this was done to link in with the story, for example we used a big white car to show wealth and then a bottle of alcohol to show depression. Therefore, the props that we used were merely for the audience to understand the video better. Casting was another major element we had to think about as we wanted to link it with the genre of the music video. Again we used stereotypes to choose the artist and dressed him up to make him link as much to the genre as possible. Finally, there is the acting done by the artist, i.e. body language and as we had a story behind the music video we needed the artist to use things like body language and facial expression to convey this (hence the extreme close up shots with the camera).

Post Production Essay.

Production for my AS work was that i had to produce a Front Cover, Contents page and a Double Page Spread. This had to be well thought about and a variety of tools were used in order for this to take place.
In post production i had to take pictures that i was going to use for my magazine. In order to this, many steps had to be taken for example I needed to get hold of a decent camera, as well as a location to take the photos at and an artist that I can use in the photos. This was all a process of post production as this needed to be done in order for the final piece to be completed. Once I had got all these things together, it was time for me to use some types of technology to put them onto the computer so I was able to edit them etc. Luckily, when we did our preliminary task, we was shown how to put them up and this made it a lot easier for me as my knowledge of doing this had increased. This is where I next had to use software to put it together. To back this up, we can use Bentley’s theory (1997) which tells us that by doing a preliminary task before helps us to do the final version, and this is true when looking back at when I did my work.
The main software in order for post-production to take place was Photoshop which gave me a range of tools to use for my post production elements. I had to play around with this first in order to get used to it and once i had done it got simple to use. The first draft i did, i was not that good at using. I inserted images that i was going to use on my magazine and used tools like Magnetic Lasso and the contrast and brightness adjusting tool. With the magnetic lasso i was able to crop around the image so the background that i did not want i could get rid of and have the image alone that i wanted for my final piece. In addition, due to me wanting the pictures to look professional and suit the genre i tried to use some effects that Photoshop had to offer to see if i could make it better. One effect i did use was the contrast tool to make the image look grey scale as this linked to my genre better and link in with colour scheme of the magazine. This was all post production as this was what i was doing in the process of making my final piece, this links to the actual piece as it will be what I will use. This is just an example of one thing that I did in my post production; however the software I used, which was Photoshop, was the main one through post production and the production process.

In A2 for post production, I had to do some of the same things that I did in AS but due the fact of me already having done them, I was able to use different elements and conventions to make it better which shows that I have made an improvement since AS.
Firstly, like before I had to take pictures of an artist, in a certain costume and a certain location which would suit the genre of my music video. From my mistakes before, I had learnt a few key things for example, the type of poses and location he would need to be in, I had thought of these before so I wasn’t looking for one last minute like I did in AS. Once I had taken my pictures, I went through the same process of putting them on the computer which allows me to edit them and what not. However, because I had done this previously, I found it very easy and did the process very quick and was able to know the tools I needed to use to crop the pictures and use it efficiently. This again shows an improvement from my AS and it was a massive advantage.
Something differently we had to do this time round is filming for the video, as this will enable to put it all together and make our final version. For this, we needed a high quality video camera to get the best quality possible for the video as this will make it more professional and we had to choose locations for us to do the filming and make it link to the genre and conventions for the video. After doing the main part of the post production, we had to upload it to the computers and this was much more difficult that doing it with images as we had to use a totally new software and we had never uploaded videos before.
However, once this was completed we then had to use the new software to the editing as we had to put it all together and make the lipsyncing was in time with the song. This was new to us both but after we got used to it, it became easier. We used our knowledge from when we first used photoshop, meaning that playing around with it first then made it easier to get used to it. In addition, like AS we did a preliminary task and this also made it a bit easier and again this links to the theorist Bentley (1997).

The post production was a must when making the final piece as this allows you to put it all together and actually create a final piece.

What makes a good essay.

What made a good essay:
  • Applying theories to your work confidently
  • Constantly linking to the question
  • A good understanding of how your skills have progressed from AS to A2
  • Using the 5 key words (Pete Fraser) as a starting point

DIKW Pyramid- a theory.

The DIKW pyramid can be useful theory to apply to the areas of Research and Planning as well as Digital Technology. How can the DIKW Pyramid be applied to your c/w?

Post Production.

List Of the Main Things I did in my AS task:
Used PHOTOSHOP to make most of the magazine. Had many pros as the tools it had to offer were really useful to the task for examples: MAGNETIC LASSO to crop around images, MAGIC WAND TOOL which allowed us to take a big chunk out of the background, MOVE TOOL and the TEXT TOOL which allowed me to move images around and the text tool let me put writing on the page.
With the softwares, there was mainly Photoshop that i used due to it making editing it so much easier and the tools on it. The disadvantages for this software was that there are many tools on the software and it got really hard to use at times because it was very professional. Luckily my strengths do consist of learning new tools quite easily so once i played around with this software, i started to get used to it and also helped other people use it quite well. In myself, i had a weakness of not having much patience so when learning new things and i do get quite annoyed when things dont go as i wanted them.

A2 work.
Again i used Photoshop for my A2 with my auxilary work and this time round it was better because i had a better idea of the tools so i was more fluent in using it. The same tools i used were the same because i had to edit things in the same way that i edited my magazine. Another software i needed to use for my A2 work was Final Cut Pro and this was an editing software.

David Bowie.

A BIT ABOUT HIM.
David Robert Jones (born 8 January 1947), known by his stage name David Bowie. David Jones, but changed his name in the 60s to avoid confusion with DavyJones (not the Pirates of the Caribbean character, but of  The Monkees  who  were  an  american  pop  band).
Although generally known as a musician and performer, Bowie’s original training, like many British musicians of his generation, was at art school. Throughout his career he has maintained strong connections to the visual arts as an exhibiting painter, printmaker, and art collector. In addition to being a highly visible supporter of the “YBA,” or Young British Artists, he has served as a contributor and member of the editorial board of the British journal, Modern Painters, since 1993.

Postmodern Elements with David Bowie.
  • On each one of his new albums he uses different themes and genres of every album he makes. This is unusual for many artists as they would usually stick to one genre and it is risky to go into other areas.
  • Influenced by a range of things, such as politics, love, drugs and literature. Bowie brought the unexpected intohis lyrics, such as the decay of society, pairing together different things.
  • He  says  with  new  ideas come  from  recombining  of other  peoples  ideas in  an  innovative  way.

ZIGGY STARDUST.
This is his Ultra Ego that David Bowie created for himself. He says it is an alien who fell to earth and is a rockstar (hence the name SPIDER FROM MARS).

Postmodern Elements for his new album- THE NEXT DAY.
Without even listening to the album we can notice, and this by using the term 'judging a book by its cover', that the album cover is very unusual. The genres David Bowie is known for are Rock, Glam Rock, Art Rock and Pop and this is not what we would usually see on the front cover. Behind the white filled box with the text in it saying THE NEXT DAY we can see a part of an image and that is what you may expect on the front cover on one of these albums. The white box, makes it more weird and this is part of being postmodern, to have weird elements in it. It is quite uneasy to the eye and may give you a sense of what will be in the album as it is quite strange.
The picture we can see behind the white text is of one of his old albums called 'Heroes'.

Conventions Essay.

The last two years have been a huge learning curve for me and the amount of things i see now that relate to media and some of the stuff i have learnt is massive. for my first task, i was required to make a music magazine and we was told to go ahead and make one; a few instructions and then we set of without any idea of what should be done, the layout, the images, it was just for us to go do it. I then set of and it was terrible, well at the time it looked ok but now i know all about magazine conventions, it is poorly made. For the second task we was told to make a music video, but wern't set of straight away to make one but did one as a class so we got a feel of what we need to do in order to produce one. These were both completed on time after a lot of time spent creating them but good memories lie with the production of them.

For my AS project which was the music magazine, i did a lot of research and planning to look at the conventions for my genre which would make it look professional and make it so it could be pictured on a shelf of a store with other magazines. The front cover may look very different to all magazines but they all have th same ideas about them as they all contain a title, sub-heading, a colour theme to make it look pleasing to the eye and much more. I had to look at hip hop magazines, like Complex and XXL to see what they did when they published magazine as it is better to get ideas from a established company which you can almost copy or develop. I did the same for looking at contents and double page spread but looked at many magazines as they mostly have the same layout also. I did follow conventions from hip hop magazines but looking at others gave me a bit more knowledge. I looked at the conventions and adapted them to my work as i wanted that professional feel and conventions from exsisting texts is the best way as they have more experience than me so they know what is best and show it on their magazines. A theorist said, "Media producers can learn nothing from studying the conventions of oldtexts," but i do not agree with this at all as you would have to use conventions to make your work look professional with the right ideas.

After learning the correct conventions for my magazine with looking at existing texts, it made doing my work a lot more easier. Before when i had no idea what to do, i didn't know where to start. But once i looked at the correct conventions and seen what i had to do, i knew where to start with my magazine and how it should look. This is a massive difference to how i was before doing my research for the correct conventions. When i had to look for things to put onto my magazine, the title for example, i know how i wanted so i made sure i chose the right ones that i needed so learning the conventions did make a huge difference for me and made doing my magazine much easier. When constructing my preliminary i thought it would be easier to work on the preliminary to construct my final magazine but once i learnt the conventions, there was no way i could and decided to start from scratch. Bentley in 1997 said "The making of the new and the re arranging of the old" and i agree with the first part of what he says for my magazine, as i had to make it starting scratch because my old one was nothing like what it would be like if i knew the conventions.

With my A2 work, i used experience from AS and knew the best thing to do was analyze music videos and again find the right conventions by looking at hip hop videos and one that may be a bit like the one i was making. This would give great sense with costume, shots and conventions like that in the hip hop genre. The same was adapted to my digipak and poster as i went through numerous hip hop digipaks and poster and analysed them. Mis-en-scene in the music video is important in order to bring the genre across well and this includes costume, props and for us, the setting we were in as we did it in the night time to bring the genre across better. In the digipak and poster, branding was important and this was done through colour scheme and for me, the artist chosen to be on my digipak and poster. I learnt doing this look at conventions from hip hop media which made it so much easier.

I mainly followed conventions in my work due to the hip hop genre being quite a strict one and challenging the conventions could take it down a different genre and look strange when you say this is a hip hop media. A lot of hip hop media products follow the same rules and conventions and ones that challenge them do not look right at all. Hip Hop is straight foward and should be one way. This is why i stuck to these conventions and kept them the same because i wanted it to look correct and when seen people would understand the genre it came from. The song also helped me with my decision with the music video and sticking to the conventions as the song is very hip hop so i had to do what the conventions intended. The whole reason why i just used and developed the conventions is because hip hop is very strict and has to be done one way to make sure it looks right.

In conclusion, conventions are very important when looking at media as they pretty much make up a whole genre. The way things are done in a genre are done because of the conventions it has so if you want to follow this genre you have to do as the conventions show so the genre you have shown can be seen. They were very significant whilst making my music video as i used them as a guide line and followed them when doing my work. I have learnt a lot about conventions and their importance with media, i know this because learning them was very helpful with my work and allowed me to aim for that professional feel that i was aiming for. Becuase established magazines, digipaks, posters and music videos use conventions, i knew i had to also and i learnt them and now i can recognise them on many different things.

Digital Technology.

Digital technology is very important when creating the work we need to do. There are many different tools that you can use in order to create your piece to a professional manner. Many softwares available allowed me to do my work easier with a better touch and let me be more creative with my work.

One software i used was Photoshop and this has numerous tools on it which allow youn to do amazing things and get to the littlest detail available. One tool that i used was Image manipulation and this allowed me to make the images for the magazine as professional as I possibly could. For example, as my pictures that i had taken using a camera had a background on there, i did not want this on my magazine so had to crop. It also allowed me to make the pictures how i wanted me to make them by using some of the tools on there, like i was able to change the brightness and contrast of my picture to make it more suitable to the colour scheme of my magazine. This was the same for the double page spread and the contents page as i made it all on photoshop, the tools on this were easy to use once i got used to it and allowed to make my AS work professional.

Cropping was one of the biggest things i had used for my magazines; without these tools it would have been nearly impossible for me to make it how i wanted it and to a professional standard. The two main ones i used and were my favourite were the MAGNETIC LASSO and MARQUEE tool (also known as MAGIC WAND). The magnetic lasso which allowed me to cut around a certain picture and did most of the work for me as i just had to take the cursor around the image. The magic wand highlighted a chunk of an area and let you delete it straight away.

Using the internet was another great type of digital technology as it is the biggest thing going right now. The internet has a lot to offer from doing research  to finding the correct fonts for my work. One main reason i used the internet quite a lot was the fact that i blogged all my work; using blogger also allowed me to get feedback from my target audience and their opinions mattered in the production process of my final work as what I was making was for them so I had to make sure I did things right. The Internet has many different facilities on it and a range of data that can be used for any work. When I think about digital technology, Internet does pop up in my head first as computers are the main thing to do with technology.

When it comes to hardware for digital technology, there was not a lot i used for my AS work. For the preliminary pictures, we used a professional camera but only kept it in one place in one angle. We had to use photoshop for the first time at this point and i found it to difficult to use so the editing was done very well. A standard wire that connects from the camera to the computer was used to put the images on to a computer and this allowed us to save the images we wanted and use them on our preliminary magazine. This enabled me to figure out how to get things you need on the camera on to a computer and this helped me in all my other work as it is a quick and easy way to do this.

The use of digital technology in my AS allowed me to work better in my A2 as i had learnt from all mistakes made in my AS. As well as mistakes, the things i did well were brought into my A2 work with the use of digital technolgy; some of the things i used in AS were used in A2 for example the camera to take pictures for my magazine and then pictures for my digipak and poster in A2.

Creativity Essay.

CREATIVITY ESSAY.

Whilst designing my coursework, I needed to be creative but in a way for it to look professional like existing texts that are out there. One key technology I used for my creativity was the internet and a computer; the computer allowed me to use different software as well as the internet as this was also mainly used on the computer. The use of the internet allowed me to research for my genre and the conventions I need to use in order to make it to the best of my ability and use things that professional and established artists/companies used when producing their magazine or music video. Another key technology that I used for my work was software’s like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. Photoshop has numerous tools on it and these enabled me to format my work and I can also experiment with the tools that it has to offer to see if it can be made better or look more professional.  Another software example of software I found to help me with my creativity was Final cut pro as this also allowed me to make it professional with the range of tools it had to offer. In modern society technology is all around us and used for many things, this makes it easier to us it, to be more creative as more experimentation can be done.
Looking at what theorists have said there is not really one that I would challenge as each theorist that talks about creativity I can agree with so rather than challenging I would either agree of develop on what they have to say; for example Jones 1993 says that mistakes can be resolved with the use of creativity and I can remember doing this when I noticed something that didn’t fit with the genre and corrected it using some more ideas I had to make it more appealing to the audience.
As I discussed technology before, that’s was very useful when doing my research and planning as I was able to do a large amount of this using the internet. For the magazine, I looked at magazines such as Complex and XXL as these established companies that make magazines that fit into my genre. I used them conventions on my magazine due to it being professional as these companies would have sold millions of companies so it would have been best for me to use conventions from existing companies. I did the same for my music video as I looked at popular artists that link to my genre to see how what conventions they used in their videos which I could use to make mine similar to theirs.
For the magazine, camera angles and mis-en-scene were very important as I wanted my artist to come across in a particular way and these allowed me to portray this. For instance, the camera angle I used for my front cover was an upwards shot as this gives a sense of an established artists as it seems as if people are looking up at him. Furthermore, I used mis-en-scene to convey ideas of being wealthy. These allowed me to bring across the correct connotations for my artists that I wanted the audience to recognise. The same applies for my music video, as camera angles had to look right to fit what was happening in the song and use a variety so the audience would not get bored and that the video did not look plain. The mis-en-scene is the same as the magazine as we used props to again bring across the right connotations for the genre. Finally, editing was key as we could not allow there not be any errors in order for it to look like a professional music video, especially for the lip sinking to be on time at all points of the song. These were adapted from existing texts as well as our own ideas and we kept bringing up new ideas to make the video to the best of our ability.
The main restriction we had was a small budget to create our texts; unlike existing artists who have a big budget which enables them to use better facilities. As we wanted the music video to look professional we had to use conventions to bring across the genre which the audience would recognise. For example, we only filmed during late hours of the night as this linked to what was happening in the music video as well as the genre. With the music video some of the locations which chose to use were unavailable at certain times which delayed our filming. This was a huge set back as we had organised times and dates for the process of filming to take place. However on many occasions we made decision together on what else we could during this time to aid us during our filming process. For instance, we used creative thinking when one of our locations was blocked and we decided on another place we could film which was not different to the original location.
Although, some ideas had come from existing texts, we wanted to use our own ideas to make it more original. We used creativity by developing conventions in music videos and magazines to make it more personalised rather than copying something that is already out there. During the planning process, we came up with many ideas that were our own to bring across the element of originality. Not much from my texts has been copied as I like to be creative and think of my own ideas or develop ones that I do like.
During the process of making these texts I learnt a lot of new techniques and software’s that I can bring to new texts that I may have to do in the future. Now I have experience in this, I can use my creative mind to make these a lot more professional. One way I have learnt to being creative is to experiment on different software’s and look at many different existing texts to get the correct conventions for the genre to make it look professional. Experimentation allows you to look mess around and see what the software’s have to offer to make it look to the best of my ability.

Theorists.

Theorists and what they are trying to say.

"A process needed for problem solving...not a special gift enjoyed by a few but a common ability possessed by most people" (Jones 1993)
I think this quote is telling us that you learn from your mistakes and once you make a mistake you can improve on your work as you won't make that same mistake again. Use creativity to solve problems.
"The making of the new and the re arranging of the old" (Bentley 1997)
This pretty much sounds as it has been written, I think this theorist is telling us that the creation of premliminary tasks aids us to make a final version and this is done by mainly making changes to the premliminary and making it better and professional. exsisting texts.
"Creativity results from the interaction of a system composed of three elements: a culture that contains symbolic rules, a person who brings novelty into the symbolic domain, and a field of experts who recognise and validatethe innovation." (Csikszentmihalyi 1996)
as a student, the rules made by exam board. me and bal worked together to make new product. our teachers moderators.
"There is no absolute judgement [on creativity] All judgements arecomparisons of one thing with another." (Donald Larning).
what you think is creative, may not be to others.
"Technology has taken all the creativity out of media production"
Saying technology has come and people may rely so much on technology.
"A project that is too well planned lacks opportunities for spontaneity and creativity."
People will plan out exactly how they want it and may lack inspirations in a future date.
"Media producers can learn nothing from studying the conventions of oldtexts,"
looking at exsisting texts does not help with your own work.

Theories that I can apply to my work.
JONES 1993- as he talks about making mistakes, this is one thing that everyone does and i most definately did but with these i adapted and aimed to make my work better. I experimented with different things and tried to be more creative when i had known i had gone wrong and this allowed me to make my work better.

DONALD LAMING- some people, when giving feedback, pointed out some elements that they thought were wrong with my work but i knew this is what i wanted to create and it was done on purpose to link with the conventions of my work. This links this theory as i was being creative by making it professional but to others it did not look right even though i knew what i was doing it.

Theories that don't apply to my work
'media  producers can leanr nothing from studying the conventions of oldtexts'
I don't believe this is true at all because by looking at these exsisting texts that have already produced and shown to an audience and may have sold a lot (this can be found on the internet) so these will be professional and i can take ideas as well as looking for the correct conventions and adapt this to my work to make it as professional as i can.

Past Productions.

For my AS course i was required to make a music magazine that would look good and professional and relate the audience i was targeting. I enjoyed doing this i have a particular genre that i am into and thought it would be a great time for me to show my knowledge and understand of this. My target audience for my magazine (which i used the genre hip hop as it is my favourite type of music), the only target audience i really had was hip hop fans. People who listen to hip hop will be able to read about their favourite artists and they will enjoy this as it is what they are interested in. People who are fond of a different genre would not really appeal to my target audience as they wont find it interesting, the same as hip hop fans would not like other magazines of a different genre like Rock or Pop. The age range would be around 13-40 as this is the most common ages for people to listen to hip hop and still follow it; there will be people outside this range but the age range i have chosen counts for the majority of people. In the evaluation stages, i looked at each part of my magazine and seen how i had improved from my first drafts i had made. There was a huge different as i was much more enhance with the technology and had a better idea on what i needed to do and how i needed to make it by doing research and planning before making my final piece. I also evaluated it by comparing it to existing magazines and the companies that produce them and seen if my magazine would fit with the company.

For my A2 work, we was asked to make a music video. This was a very fun, interesting yet extremely hard task due to many technology problems that had occurred during this task. As i did the same genre of music from my AS coursework, i found it easier to get ideas and inspirations as i knew what i was looking for. The AS work helped me a lot in this as i had done a lot of research for it and then when it came to my A2 work i had much better knowledge of the genre. The target audience was again the same as my AS audience as it is in the same genre (even though my 41 year old uncle loves the song) and there is people who will be out of this age range but like the music. For the evaluation stages, i did the same as the AS one as i looked at my first drafts i made for this course and seen how i had improved on it. Again, having better knowledge with technology made it easier for me to do a better piece of work and make it to the best of my ability. I also talked about how artists now make their videos and what inspirations i got from them to complete my work.

Skills and Evaluation of production

Describe and evaluate your skills development over the course of your production work.
IN OWN WORDS
How i have done better throughout this course with all my production work and evaluate how i have done better.

List of things i can talk about:
Premlim magazine
Final Magazine
Prelim Music video
Final Music video
Draft digipak
Final digipak
Draft Poster
Final Poster

Definitions to you:
DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY- Cameras, Photoshop, Computers, Phones, Apps, Softwares, Programmes

CREATIVITY- Looking at previous, exsisting ideas and use them as inspiration. Look at different things for inspiration e.g. books, paintings, genreal things that inspire you. Conventions for exsisting texts.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING- Research would come under looking at exsisting texts, comparing conventions for different genres and gettin inspiration to adapt these to your product and make sure it is right. Planning is putting all your research together to get an idea of what you are going to do.

POST PRODUCTION- This is the editing on how and what you have changed and what programmes were used to make this better.

USING CONVENTIONS FROM REAL MEDIA- To make our work as professional as we possibly can we studied conventions in music videos already existing from famous artists and take inspiration from them by looking at the conventions they used in that genre.
